El teatro fue construido a los 64 años de
haberse publicado la novela inmortal "La María " de Jorge Isaacs, en
la esquina de la calle 12 con carrera tercera donde había funcionado el teatro
moderno.
El escenario es suntuoso, amplio, para
presentaciones multitudinarias y dispone de una altísima tramoya, la suntuosa
fachada de capiteles y guirnaldas neoclásicas con el escudo de Cali en lo alto
y la vera efigie de don Jorge Isaac definen un estilo y determinan una época de
esplendor y el arte deco.
